Latest ASUS Eee PC 1000HE

According to WIRED, ASUS has updated its famous Eee PC flagship with the newest Intel 1.66-GHz Atom N280 processor.

The new chip is able to provide fast computing speed as well as providing good HD video playback. On the existing Atom chip, video playback is poor and choppy at times. Thus with Intel's new Atom chip, users can look forward to a better entertainment choice.

I wonder how the rest of the competition would line up their own products. For now, ASUS has once again won the edge for being the first to come out with a new product of the new chip. The only thing that's left would be the pricing. It's reported to be selling at $400, which I suppose is roughly around S$800.

Quite a mid-range pricing, considering the previous netbook options. Let's see how the competition heats up for the new Intel chip.

Release Date Confirmed for Third Twilight Movie

Whoa! It has been reported that the release date for the third Twilight movie has been announced by Summit Entertainment.

The date is 30 June 2010. As for the second Twilight movie, its release date is 20 November 2009, which is this year. Robert Pattison, star of the movies, has even barely start the filming of the second film.

How on earth are they going to make the third film in such a short time? Well I have no idea but it remains to be seen whether the quality for these films will turn out to be as good as the Harry Potter movies by Warner Bros.

Churning the movies out in such a short period of time would require enormous amount of capital, something which is not lacking for Warner Bros. However for Summit Entertainment, it might be quite a different story.

Perhaps the first movie has given the studio some windfall and so it dares to make all these release dates.

Oh well, whatever the case, let's wait and see how they can meet the deadline. After all, Hollywood always uses the postponement tactic when they fail to meet deadlines.

Humility greatly needed in Singapore

I have been thinking a lot after reading this interesting article in TODAY newspaper yesterday. I duplicated the article below for easy reference:

--

No excuses, no hesitation, this man of meagre means lives by his principles and wouldn’t shirk responsibility
11:57 AM February 12, 2009
Richard Gomez

LIFE is strange — an unfortunate accident can lead to a memorable experience.

Just before Chinese New Year I was returning home when I was involved in an accident. I was about to enter the CTE from Ang Mo Kio Ave 3 when my car was hit from behind by a pick-up truck. The impact flung my car forward but I managed to pull off into the road shoulder and come to a stop without any further mishap.

I sat in my car for a few seconds, considering my response to the usual tirade one has come to expect in such situations in Singapore, such as: “Why did you stop so suddenly?” or “Why did you reverse?” and then got out of my car.

I felt thoroughly ashamed of myself when the driver approached me and asked if I was hurt. I was dumb-struck when he repeated his question. It dawned on me that he was really concerned about my well-being and was not going to find excuses for his momentary lapse.

I assured him I was not injured. He then volunteered to pay for the damages, stating that he was entirely at fault. He asked me if I minded sending the car to his friend’s workshop. I readily agreed and he then led me to the shop in Sin Ming and gave instructions to his friend to do whatever was necessary and to bill him for it.

He then hauled the contents of my car — golf clubs and cart — into his pick-up and insisted on driving me home.

On the way he disclosed that he was a vegetable delivery man and worked 14 hours a day, seven days a week.

He had occasional days off but worked longer hours during Chinese New Year. I asked him how he could afford to pay for the repairs and he said: “I make mistake I pay, I use bonus to pay.”

I was now close to tears. Here was a person with minimal education and meagre means, demonstrating the highest principles, while around him people with ample means are involved in devious schemes to further enrich themselves.

I made up my mind at that point that it would be criminal on my part to allow him to pay, and told him so. He resisted initially but then gratefully accepted.

Mr Chua is worth his weight in gold to Singapore. He amply demonstrated to me that honour and principle are not necessarily related to education or status. Many of our affluent citizens could take a page out of his book.

Mr Chua made me realise what Oliver Goldsmith had in mind in The Deserted Village when he said:

Ill fares the land, to hastening ills a prey,

Where wealth accumulates, and men decay.

Princes and lords may flourish, or may fade;

A breath can make them, as a breath has made:

But a bold peasantry, their country’s pride,

When once destroy’d, can never be supplied.

It is my fervent hope that we will start appreciating the value of people like Mr Chua to Singapore.

--

It is such a profound article with a serious thought-provoking issue that makes me feel so humbled. The writer is right in saying that we ought to take a leaf from the delivery man's book.

Such a display of integrity is indeed rare in Singapore. Most of the elite people in Singapore don't give a damn about us peasants.

We are often overlooked just because we don't earn the kind of money that they are earning. Even a Member of Parliament called us lesser mortals, downgrading our morality as well as humanity. A fellow blogging community immediately grabbed hold of the offending terms and wrote an article on it here.

We peasants, or lesser mortals in the MP's case, may not earn as much money as them or have as high status as them, but we do have our pride and integrity. We do not resort to name-calling, especially if we are going to be of the same high position as that MP.

Elite people such as the MP should learn how to be a human and learn integrity. Money and status doesn't mean everything. In society, we shouldn't divide ourselves into higher mortals and lesser mortals. Aren't we all belong to the same countrymen after all?

Looks like this is not the case here in Singapore. So I better steer clear of those higher mortals lest I get ridiculed by them.

Grrr...

Whoa! Teachers get caned in Tanzania!

According to this BBC News article, 19 teachers were reported to have been caned in Tanzania, under the orders of the District Commissioner.

Reasons given for the caning were that the teachers were blamed for being late or not showing up for work and not teaching the official syllabus.

Looks like it's quite difficult being a teacher there. On top of that, these teachers were caned in front of their students. That's the highest form of humiliation that can ever be inflicted on a teacher. How are the teachers going to gain back their students' trust, if that's even possible?

If that were to happen in Singapore, how would the public react?

Treasure found via Google Earth?

Once again, Google Earth is in the news.

This time round, a man was reported to have used the software to find a treasure off Aransas Pass in Texas. Apparently, a shoeprint-shaped had made him believe that what he had found was the wreckage of a Spanish barquentine.

Now the case has ended up in court as the location in which the wreckage was located appeared to be in someone's private property.

If this man can prove that the land beneath which the ship is submerged is navigable waterway, he will get the treasure first, according to U.S. law.

However the lawyers of the property's owner is claiming otherwise. If that's the case, then the owner will get the treasure rather than the man who googled it. Interesting, eh?

In addition, the state of Texas' lawyers are sure that there's no commercial waterway there. Therefore, as far as they are concerned, if it's in water, it's in Texas's water. That adds an interesting mix to the claim equation.

How will all these pan out? Let's wait and see.

Now it's time to start using Google Earth since it has brought us many interesting nuggets in the technology world.

Ahoy! I bet Captain Jack Sparrow is teething with jealousy right now. Haha!

Google Earth catches people in toilet?!

This is quite an old piece of news but it's still interesting to share nonetheless.

The Inquirer had reported that Google Earth had managed to capture an image of a man sitting in the toilet. Man, that is sure a high piece of advance technology.

This image was reportedly taken off an inner-city Melbourne backyard in Australia. It's amazing how Google Earth managed to capture such an image. Poor guy probably still didn't know that he had made headlines in the news.

But then again, it's his own fault for not closing the door when using the toilet. Hmmm...

What say you?

New Half Blood Prince Movie Posters

According to HPANA, there are some new high resolution movie posters released for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

They look quite mysterious and gloomy at the same time. See the pictures below for illustrations.

Professor Dumbledore

Harry Potter

According to the date printed on the poster, the upcoming movie is slated for release on 17 July 2009. Oh man, I can't wait for the movie to arrive soon! It was supposed to be released last year but Warner Bros changed its mind. *sighs*

Anyway, Daniel Radcliffe looks so cool in this poster. He has certainly grown into this character ever since he first started acting as Harry Potter when he was just 11 years old.

Let's hope the new movie will surpass its predecessors and create new records for the Harry Potter franchise.

Now on to Kuroshitsuji

Now I am currently watching a new anime, Kuroshitsuji, aka The Black Butler. The anime premiered in Japan in October 2008 and is still currently running.

It is based off a manga of the same name by mangaka Yana Toboso. So far I have been watching the anime and have yet to read the manga. However the graphics for both manga and anime are very well-drawn and makes the characters look uber-cool.

However judging from the anime, the manga should be quite interesting to read as the story plot is very intriguing. There's a lot of drama, mystery, supernatural and comedy going on at the same time.

I have found some nice Kuroshitsuji pictures on the web below:

Vol. 1 Cover showing Sebastian

Sebastian and Ciel

Left to right: Bard, Maylene and Finian from the anime

The protagonist at the centre of the story is Sebastian Michaelis, a demonic butler who is obligated to serve Ciel Phantomhive, the twelve-year-old head of the Phantomhive noble family, due to a contract he made with Ciel.

Ciel has lost his parents in a mysterious accident and thus taken over the Phantomhive toy and sweets business. Sebastian mainly carries out whatever task that Ciel orders him to do. The Phantomhive family is actually serving the Queen Majesty and whenever there are problems in the city, Ciel would be sent out to investigate together with the help of his demonic butler.

Besides Sebastian, there's also the chef aka Bard, super clumsy housemaid aka Maylene, gardener aka Finian and the house steward aka Tanaka who always goes ho, ho, ho.

So far Ciel has solved quite a number of mysterious cases and most of the time, Sebastian has to go to his rescue in order to keep Ciel alive. As proof of their contract, Ciel's right eye has a special symbol that can also be found on Sebastian's left hand.

Through wikipedia, I discovered that the seiyu fo Ciel is actually a woman named Maaya Sakamoto. Not that I'm very surprised though. Most seiyus do voice acting for both genders as they probably can widen their horizons as well.

For now I shall continue to watch the anime after which I will start on reading the manga. Sometimes the anime might differ from the manga.

Kuroshitsuji is quite worthwhile to watch so I would recommend it to anyone who's interested to watch some supernatural dramatic comedy.

Manga Read: Loving InuYasha Manga

I have been wanting to write this entry for a while but I keep getting sidetracked by other stuffs. Now I can finally get to write about an amazing manga that I read last month.

This is a very old manga series, InuYasha, which debuted way back in 1996 and was only recently concluded last year. The mangaka, Rumiko Takahashi, is very skillful in her craft and the story plot is very interesting too. The whole series contains 56 volumes and I read them all from 21 January to 30 January 2009.

Yep. It took me one week to complete everything. Towards the end, I was sad to finish InuYasha yet at the same I am also glad that he lives together happily with Kagome after all that they have gone through. Below are some pictures that I found through the web:

Vol. 1 cover

Left to right: InuYasha, Kagome, Shippo, Miroku and Sango

Left to right: Naraku, Kagome, InuYasha and Kikyo

InuYasha with Tessaiga

InuYasha in his demon form

Cute InuYasha moment

Cute InuYasha moment

Cute InuYasha moment

The story follows the trial and tribulation of Kagome, who travelled back in time to feudal Japan, where she met InuYasha. InuYasha was initially after a particular jewel, the Shikon no Tama, in order to become a full demon. He is a hanyou, meaning a half-demon and a half-human.

This is because his demon father had fell in love with his human mother. Because of his parentage, InuYasha was often ridiculed by both demons and humans alike. Hence, this makes him crave for the powers of the Shikon no Tama.

Kagome is a modern Japanese student whose family runs a shrine. There is an old well in her yard and one day she accidentally fallen through the well, only to find herself in the feudal era of Japan.

It was later revealed that Kagome is the reincarnation of Kikyo, a former priestess who protected the Shikon no Tama. Coincidentally, she had also fallen in love with InuYasha, who had originally wanted to become a human being so that he could be with Kikyo.

Due to a jealous antagonist in the form of Naraku, the lovers were separated in death and even then, Naraku never lets them off, consistently in pursuit of Kikyo. Even though Kikyo had died, she was brought back to life by a youkai using clay and soil from her burial bones and earth.

Thus a love triangle forms between InuYasha, Kagome and Kikyo. There are quite a number of scenes where Kagome gets her heart broken by InuYasha and I truly felt for her. Yet despite that, she still stuck by him, always giving her support without fail. My favourite picture of the couple in the manga is seen below:

InuYasha and Kagome

The manga teaches us about true love and true friendship that never dies. No matter how close they were to death's door, the characters never give up and thus they are able to survive through the worst fights and conquer their enemies.

Even faced with an elder cold, troublesome brother like Sesshomaru doesn't daunt InuYasha at all. They share the same father but different mothers. On top of that, Sesshomaru is hankering after Tessaiga and he would always start a fight with InuYasha just to prove that he is more powerful and worthy than InuYasha.

Eventually, Sesshomaru came round to his senses and even takes extreme good care of Rin even though he doesn't like humans. He also has a follower, Jaken, who suck up to him at every opportunity.

Left to right: Rin, Jaken and Sesshomaru

Yet there are lots of humourous scenes in the manga that still continue to tickle m toes even though I have finished reading. The mangaka shows how InuYasha cope with living in Kagome's modern world, usually met with hilarious failure.

Overall, this manga series is definitely worth the read and InuYasha's numerous adventures gets more dangerous with each passing chapter. All 558 of them. *grin*

So if you have the time, do check out InuYasha. Even though the series has been adapted into an anime series, I don't have the chance to watch them and besides, the anime ended earlier than the manga. Hence it is not a completed series either.

Nonetheless, the manga more than makes up for the slacking anime and I would re-read it again when I have more free time.

My Lo Hei Dinner for Ox Year

Tonight I went for a lo hei session with mayi and maomao at Suntec City's Crystal Jade Kitchen. Xin wasn't able to attend as she had made other appointments for the night.

Well, frankly speaking, somehow I don't really feel the mood for any celebration this year. Be it birthdays, wedding dinners or even the lunar new year celebrations did not get me into a happy mood.

I guess too many bad news on the economic front has gotten to my brain and heart. Nonetheless tonight I tried to put unhappy news out of the way. Yet I also found myself talking, or rather grumbling, about my work. The sad thing is I don't have any good things to look forward to there as well. *sighs*

Anyway, here's a picture that was taken at Crystal Jade. Our plate of Lo Hei yusheng. The flash function was turned off when this picture was taken, it looks more yellowish due to the lighting there. See how we posed our chopsticks as if we were preparing to toss the dish as soon as the camera went off. *grin*

Lo Hei Yu Sheng @ Crystal Jade Crystal

So me & maomao ended up late for our dinner. Maomao arrived the latest at 6.30 pm even though we supposed to meet at 5.30pm. Last year, we also went to Crystal Jade for lo hei and maomao wasn't around to meet up with us.

Besides the lo hei dish,we also ordered some other foods which I had neglected to take pictures. I was rather engrossed in my eating.

After we finished our dinner, we went window-shopping for a short while before we came across a sale at Levis Strauss Signature. Two bottoms were going for $99.90 and so I promptly bought one straight cut and one bootleg cut. Thus I saved around $31 due to the promotion, which is quite okay.

Well, that's just about it for the day. Pretty boring eh? Hopefully the new year will bring some good luck for me.

Cheers!

This episode finally reunites Kyoko with her hated man, Fuwa Shoutaro!!! How will she react to seeing him again after so long? What is Shou's reaction upon seeing her?

Oh man, I couldn't wait for the next episode to arrive for that's the penultimate episode in the series. Things are getting very interesting and very fun to watch, though it's still better to read the manga as well.

Anyway, on to the show!!!

Anime Watch: Completed with Princess Princess!

Yay! I have completed watching all the episodes of Princess Princess. I'm so glad that I have the opportunity to catch this anime as it's really funny with its unique cross-dressing theme.

From left to right: Mikoto, Tooru and Yuujiro in their alter-egos

Tooru

Yuujiro

Mikoto

As expected, the later episodes feature more funny situations which the guys couldn't even predict themselves. I particularly enjoyed watching episode six as both Tooru and Yuujiro went to a classmate's house for a stayover. Akira is a very normal-looking boy with extraordinary-looking family members.

His parents are exceptionally beautiful and so do his siblings. He is the only odd one out yet his family doesn't mind him at all. I had a good laugh watching Tooru and Yuujiro guessing the identities of the family members. They mistook Akira's father for an elder brother, then mistook Akira's sister for the same elder brother. Oh boy, you just can't watch that episode without bursting into laughter.

I love it when the boys' faces are drawn into the following kawaii facial expressions below:

Funny faces

More funny faces

They are really cute, aren't they? Overall this anime is pretty light and humourous so watch it with a relax mind. Don't take it too seriously since it doesn't take itself seriously either.

I hope there are more of such funny animes out there. Who knows what the Japanese will come up with next? Too bad such animes won't be coming to Singapore anytime soon. Its theme might not pass the strict censorship here even though it's only for fun. *sighs*

Wow, Google Earth looks so cool now

According to CNET, the latest version of Google Earth is now able to let users go right into the deep oceans for an unusual exploration.

There's even a picture of an underwater mountain that is found off the coast of Hawaii, taken by CNET. See below:

It's so cool being able to peep right into the ocean without getting out of the house. But of course, nothing still beat the real thing of going down personally into those oceans, eh?

It's really interesting to work for Google, seeing that all these sorts of fascinating softwares are coming from them. Such innovativeness is certainly useful in keeping them ahead of the competition.

Way to go, Google!

Anime Watch: Princess Princess

Today I have just started watching an older anime series titled Princess Princess. The moment I started watching, it got me hooked as the plot is very interesting and the characters are very funny.

The story revolves around a beautiful boy, Toru Kouno, who has just transferred to an all-boys school. He thought it would be a good school for himself but there's an interesting side to the school's culture.

There's a tradition whereby extremely pretty boys are selected to become a Princess in their first year. The reason being that this would make the dull school life much more livelier and since the first year boys have yet to mature, they would be able to wear those frilly girly costumes. Only first year boys will be considered for the Princess role.

When Toru entered the school, there were already two Princesses around. The blonde guy, a.k.a. the Western Princess, is Yuujiro Shihoudani. The bright pink haired guy, a.k.a. the Eastern Princess, is Mikoto Yutaka. They are so named due to their respective dorm rooms' locations.

Toru becomes Yuujiro's roommate and is soon selected to become a Princess after he joined the school. Being a Princess has many benefits which include getting 30 meal coupons every month, free schoolbooks, free school clothes, free school shoes, etc. You name it and it is most likely to be free.

However being a Princess also means another different thing. They will have to work in order to get their benefits. Work can range from cheering for all the school's clubs whenever they have competitions, dressing up for functions or even participate in a photograhpy session which charges students for each photo they buy. Some of these money also become the Princess' pocket money.

Out of the three, only Mikoto is strongly against being a Princess. However once you have been selected, you can't turn it down. Otherwise you will lose credit points for your studies.

Being a Princess means taking up quite a lot of time so whenever they are engaged in Princess activities, they are always excused and their absence won't show up in their attendance records.

So far I am watching up to episode 4 so there might be more twists in the plot later on. I am certainly looking forward to the rest of the episodes as it's such a hilarious anime and the boys are really beautifully drawn as well. Plus when they are dressed up as girls, they really look like girls. ^o^

Below are some pictures which I found from using Google and they are not my copyrights either. Click on the pictures to get a better resolution.

From left to right: Mikoto, Toru and Yuujiro

From left: Yuujiro, Toru and Mikoto, dressing up as girls

For now, it is revealed that Mikoto has a secret girlfriend and he doesn't want his girlfriend to know of his Princess job. When the summer vacation arrived, he was the only Princess to go home, presumably to meet his girlfriend.

There are many funny scenes in the anime and if I have the time, I might try to post them up for sharing too. =D

I'm glad to have come across this anime. See ya!

More MSI Wind U120 Updates

This time round, a review has been done by Laptop Mag on the new MSI Wind U120.

Basically, the emphasis is still on the new design of the Wind. Other factors such as the Intel chip, OS and other specifications still remain the same as before. So that means there's not much of a reason to do an upgrade if you are a current Wind owner. However the new Wind does come in at a cheaper price.

Looks like this time round MSI fails to grab the opportunity to do more improvement on its flagship netbook. Now it's up to the other competitors to show off their products' superiority over the new Wind.

Will they succeed? Only time can tell.
