Rumours are abound with leaked news that Apple will be producing its own version of a netbook, the only computer firm that has yet to release any.
If the rumours are to be believed, Apple will release a touchscreen-enabled netbook that will offers the company's signature sophisticated gadgets and operating software.
At this moment in time, one can only hope how Apple won't be pricing the supposed netbook way out of netbook range. Otherwise we are better off with web-browsing on its iPhone. Hey, I just thought of a lame name for the netbook, iNet. Wahahaha!
If the netbook comes out with that name, you know you read it here first.

MSI Wind U123 Coming Soon
This time round, the spotlight is on MSI and its Wind line. The MSI Wind U123 is also getting equipped with the new Intel Atom N280 processor and is rumoured to be arriving in April too.
The interesting bit is that it will be available in either 6-cells battery or 9-cells battery. Both sound excellent in terms of maximising energy usage. The original Wind initially only came with a 3-cells battery option which was a huge disappointment. Battery life was weak and I could only squeeze out 1.5 hours of usage before my Wind raises the flag for AC power.
I can't wait for the new Wind to arrive and read reviews on it. Nonetheless I am still happy with my 1st generation of MSI Wind. Even if the new Wind is available now, I don't see the need to buy it.
Still, kudos to MSI for keeping with the latest changes in technology.

Latest ASUS Eee PC 1000HE
According to WIRED, ASUS has updated its famous Eee PC flagship with the newest Intel 1.66-GHz Atom N280 processor.
The new chip is able to provide fast computing speed as well as providing good HD video playback. On the existing Atom chip, video playback is poor and choppy at times. Thus with Intel's new Atom chip, users can look forward to a better entertainment choice.
I wonder how the rest of the competition would line up their own products. For now, ASUS has once again won the edge for being the first to come out with a new product of the new chip. The only thing that's left would be the pricing. It's reported to be selling at $400, which I suppose is roughly around S$800.
Quite a mid-range pricing, considering the previous netbook options. Let's see how the competition heats up for the new Intel chip.

More MSI Wind U120 Updates
This time round, a review has been done by Laptop Mag on the new MSI Wind U120.
Basically, the emphasis is still on the new design of the Wind. Other factors such as the Intel chip, OS and other specifications still remain the same as before. So that means there's not much of a reason to do an upgrade if you are a current Wind owner. However the new Wind does come in at a cheaper price.
Looks like this time round MSI fails to grab the opportunity to do more improvement on its flagship netbook. Now it's up to the other competitors to show off their products' superiority over the new Wind.
Will they succeed? Only time can tell.

New Second Gen of MSI Wind
According to Gadget Lab's new article, MSI has just released a new generation of the hugely successful MSI Wind for this year. A test unit was sent to Gadget Lab for review and it's still early to tell if the performance of the new Wind will be better than the previous generation, which I'm using currently.
From the pictures provided below, it is clear that the design has been redrawn to look more professional than before. However, the article contains very little information on the new Wind so hopefully I can find other better tech sites that does a better review than this.
Nonetheless, I am still very happy using my own Wind and I don't mind using Win XP for my OS, unlike the writer of the article who called it crap. Bah! Win XP is way better than Vista. At the very lest, it doesn't gobble up lots of resources just to maintain operations.

Condemn Dell Computers!
From now on, I am condemning all Dell products and services. My one and only experience with Dell customer service left an extreme bitter taste in my mouth. Not only they are extremely unreliable, they are also unrepentent.
I was helping one of my executives to purchase a Dell laptop as a replacement. The supposed estimated time of arrival (ETA) given by Dell was stated as 23 December 2008. However the ETA lapsed and no one from Dell deemed it fit to contact us to say that a delay had occurred. And so, I had to call back the sales person to check on the status of the delivery. The worst part of the thing is that the sales person is extremely hard to contact. Numerous calls went unanswered. Emails were either not replied or were sent late. In short, it's a disaster.
Then Dell gave a second ETA as 5 Jan 2009. The day came and went and there's still no sight of the laptop at all. Yet again, calls went unanswered and emails were replied late. They were supposed to reply back to us on the status of the delivery by yesterday. However the stupid sales guy only sent out the reply today.
Again, the ETA was pushed back. This time round, the new date is 22 Jan 2009. The reason given is that they need to do a firmware update on the laptop and hence delivery will be delayed. It's very frustrating to keep getting news that the laptop is unable to arrive on time. Don't Dell install calendars and clocks at their offices so that they can be punctual to their own customers at the very least?
Dell people are rude in the sense that they never bother to get back to you on the status of the orders made and all the dates they proposed were eventually lapsed. By the time 22 Jan 09 comes, it will be yet another new ETA from Dell. I can bet my moolah on that.
Dell = untrustworthy and unreliable.
Nothing from them is worth the thousand dollars paid for the laptop. So, in future it would be everybody's best interests to avoid purchasing any products from Dell. I have written to Acer to check on their laptop stock instead. Hopefully everything goes well and the new laptop might just be on its way. I'm exhausted from all the chasing and there's no reward for doing all those tasks. It's quite meaningless actually. Even I don't get to use a proper desktop. My office laptop is a permanent loan unit and it sucks.
It only has 512MB RAM and this makes it slow to respond to commands. I try to minimise any heavy usage of the laptop but it will still hang sometimes. Crazy little fellow.

My new 6-cell battery
I know this has been way too long in coming ever since I collected my 6-cell battery last month. Now I'm posting this to make up for my promise.
Overall, the battery life is definitely a great improvement over the 3-cell battery. Most of the times, I could log in about 4 hours of usage compared to my previous usage of 1.5 hours. I also got the technician at Corbell to overclock my wind but the guy only gave me an increase of 4%. It's pathetic but at least I'm having an overclock function rather than an underclock function, as was the case before.
The overclock function is made possible through MSI's latest bios update for the wind. Now my wind is better than ever and I'm so glad that I made the decision to buy it. Worth every cent, I must say.
Below are some of the pictures that I took of my 6-cell battery with my wind. I also took picture of the overclocking mode. Note that the power light turns to orange instead of its usual blue colour. Interesting and pretty, right?
What do you think of my wind? Worthy enough to dethrone the eee pc? Now my wind is perfect. Battery life is good. Has overclocking function. Is small and portable. What's there not to like about my wind?

MSI Wind is Product of the Year
According to MSIWind.Net, pocket-lint has announced the winners of the Vodafone Pocket-lint Gadget Awards and the MSI Wind walked away with both the Best Laptop/Netbook award as well as the Product of the Year award.
The awards are decided by the UK's top technology and gadget journalists from online and print and MSIWind.Net has stated that it is one of the more reputable sites around.
I'm feeling so proud of my MSI Wind's achievements and the fact that I am an owner of a MSI Wind makes me dazzled. LOL. I don't know much about technology but I do follow the trends going on in the technology world.
It's a wonder for the MSI Wind to take the Product of the Year award straight right from under Apple's iPhone 3G. After all, you can't deny the fact that the iPhone has redefined the boundaries of the mobile phone world. Just like the way ASUS's eeepc single-handedly created a market of its own: Netbooks.
Besides, both the MSI Wind and the eeepc come from the Asian people, not those elite engineers from Silicon Valley, mind you. This make their achievements in the technology world much, much more significant.
In any case, I'm delighted to have my MSI Wind with me and hope it will last me for some time to come.

This is a follow-up picture to my first discharge on the 6 cells battery for my MSI Wind. Click on the thumbnail to get a bigger picture.
As the battery is still new, I will need to discharge it a couple of times before it finally stabilizes. But overall, the battery life for the 6 cells is around 5 hours, give or take. This is provided if the screen brightness is set to the minimum level and with only WIFI turned on. I rarely use other functions like the webcam or the bluetooth technology.
This in turn, helps to increase the battery life and giving a much more favourable lifespan than the 3 cells battery shit. I am a light user and my main activity is web-surfing. So this Wind works out to a nicely timing of roughly 5 hours and that's more than enough time.
However the battery life is still pretty much dependent on the user's usage pattern. If you turn on all the functions and do intensive work like photoshopping or browse videos all the time, stream music in the background, etc then you will drain the battery much faster.

A Short Update on my 6 cells battery
I have just collected my 6 cells 5200 mAH battery from Corbell yesterday and left it to charge for around 10 hours.
Today is my first discharge and I started using my Wind at around 2.13pm and the battery has lasted till now, and the time reads 9.16pm.
That's like 7 hours of usage for me, with the brightness level set to minimum and with only WIFI turned on. Nothing else. All I did was just web surfing, which is my main purpose of getting the Wind.
Now my battery indicator tells me that I'm left with around 12% of power or about 33 minutes of usage time. Wee!
So far, I have been very pleased with my new battery set & coupled together with my existing 3 cells battery, I can safely chucked my power adaptor at home without any worries of running out of battery power.
Now, MSI should have done this a long time ago and not make users wait infinitely for the 6 cells battery to arrive. That was such a torture. With my 3 cells battery producing only 90 minutes worth of battery life, I am literally bound to my room AND to the power adaptor. Not an amusing thing, I can tell ya that.
So, all in all, this 6 cells battery is a worthy bargain @ $99 for early adoptors. Now I'm truly mobile! w00t!

New MSI Wind U120 Coming Soon
Fudzilla has reported that a new successor to the highly popular MSI Wind is due for release in around December. The new netbook, which is known as Wind U120, will be targeted at business users and hence its colour scheme is geared towards a more serious theme. Fudzilla has kindly posted the pictures for us to drool over:
Based on the pictures and Fudzilla's observations, the netbook does not seem to differ much from the earlier version, the Wind U100, which I am using right now. Thus there is no real incentive for me to do any upgrading to this new machine.
Besides, my current Wind is still working very well and I am very happy with it (except for the lack of optical drive). Nonetheless, it's interesting to see what new products MSI is coming up with to whet consumers' appetite.

MSI Wind Now Selling in Carrefour
According to Corbell on HardwareZone, the MSI Wind is now being sold at Carrefour's Tech Fair at Plaza Singapura (PS) from 6 Oct to 12 Oct.
It's also stated that the Wind advertised for selling is while stocks last. Will consumers rush down to PS to buy the little netbook? Stocks of the netbook has been very inconsistent in Singapore and it's very hard to get hold of one unless you manage to get on a preorder list.
Or maybe the hype for the Wind might have died down by now and consumers are probably choosing ASUS's eeepc over the Wind. Who knows? I am not too sure but I ain't heading down to PS just to check the stocks availability.
I am already the proud owner of the MSI Wind for quite some time and I am mostly satisfied with it. Its battery life problem still plagues me though. Nonetheless, I am not letting the battery life bug me down since I'm using AC power for most of the time.
The other thing that still bothers me is the lack of a DVD drive. Initially I thought it would not be a problem as I don't use the DVD drive very often. However some of the gadgets that I bought came with CD installation software and I can't use my Wind to utilize them.
Oh well. I'll just have to make do with using both my Wind and my Acer desktop when the need arises. It's just a matter of adaptability.

New Versions of MSI Wind Soon
Wow. Laptop Mag just posted an article on the MSI Wind's future models coming to major retailer and looks like the newer versions are going to be beefed up with lots of yummy specifications.
But for me, the most important is the arrival of the 6-cell battery and MSI is saying that by the end of October, they should be clearing up the battery problem. I most certainly hope that the 6-cells battery will be 5200Mah by the time it's ready for collection.
If not, then perhaps this might be worth checking out. The only thing is, it's all quoted in USD and so the price of getting a 9-cells battery will be very high. Plus the 9-cells battery is estimated to give around 7 hours of battery life, which might not sound like much when compared to ASUS's EEEPC 6-cells battery which can give around 6 to 7 hours of battery life.

Ha! A Retard Reads My Blog?
I am very amused to log in to my blog and found a guy who calls himself retard posting on my cbox. So far, I have very little responses gathered in my cbox, so it's quite fun to see this retard posting about nonsense.
Well, billovee is a CHEAPSKATE guy. Freebies are given freely and willingly by the IT fair vendors. No one actually goes around comparing freebies instead of pricing. No matter what the freebies are, the most important thing is that your buying focus is on the main IT product, in my case a MSI Wind.
My Wind doesn't come with any freebies but I don't go round demanding people to give me freebies either. That's just plain shameless. If the product doesn't come with freebies then it's fine by me. My main focus is the Wind, not the freebies.
But if the vendors are offering the freebies themselves without the consumer asking for them, then that's ok too. It take 2 hands to clap. If the vendors don't want to give any freebies, then no matter how much the consumer demands, they would get nothing. If the vendors are willing to give based on their own initiative, then the consumers will get a good deal.
In fact, the price of the freebies is probably calculated into the selling price or is probably not worth much. In life, you don't hanker after things that you can't afford. There is no such thing as free lunch in this world. Everything comes with a price. You want cheapskate products with lots of freebies? Go to China. Everything is cheapo there. And probably poisonous too.

I don't even need to ask the vendors for freebies at the kiosk. All I did was to ask about the main products and they offered the freebies willingly. I don't even need to ask the vendors for freebies at the kiosk. All I did was to ask about the main products and they offered the freebies willingly. I don't have to be thick-skinned and demand for freebies before I make my purchases.
Still, everybody has their own opinions and no one will be fully convinced by the other party. This retard/billovee has his own view but so do I.
Plus this is my blog so I can and shall write whatever I feel is right. And billovee can't do anything about it. Other than being a online pest. Wahahaha!!!

Preorder for Wind 6-cells battery
Just now I had submitted a preorder for my MSI Wind netbook to Corbell. They are now giving a special price of $99 for the battery and each first batch buyer can only buy 1 unit at the special price. So add on to my earlier purchase price of $864, which includes an upgrade of RAM to 2GB, the total cost for my Wind comes to $963.
Compared to the people who bought the Wind during the recent Comex, I'm paying much more than what they are paying. The specifications for the Wind at the Comex remains almost the same except that it now comes with a 160GB SATA hard disk, a 6-cell battery with a free 3-cell battery. If the option of upgrading the 1GB RAM to 2GB RAM applies to them, these new batch of owners are looking at a grand price of only $934, which is $29 less than what I'm paying.
It might not seem like much but with that extra money, I could have gotten myself an optical mouse AND a laptop skin.
Well, I guess that's the price to pay for being the first adopters of the popular netbook. At least I get to use it for a few months before others. Should I console myself based on that? Hmmm....
But you have got to admit it's pretty tiring to wait infinitely for the 6-cell battery to arrive. MSI really tests its customers patience to the limit.

Ugly Singaporeans on Internet Forums
I have experienced a first-hand incident whereby a netizen shamelessly asked for freebies in a popular local forum. This is what the fella requested from a local computer vendor in the forum:
This billovee shamelessly asked the vendor to give him a free 6-cell wind battery just because he started the preorder listing for the MSI Wind. Come on. Get a life. There is no free lunch in this world. Everything you ask for comes with a price. A simple start up on a preorder list doesn'twarrant as a valid reason to get a freebie. It's not as though you are the only person that can come up with such a list.
This guy's face is super thick loh. He doesn't understand the actual meaning of Corbell's reply. This is a disgrace on the Internet world. Look at what he wrote in reply to Corbell's initial rejection:
People already give an answer to the question posed but why can't this guy's head absorb it? It's a shame, really. Ugly scenes could have been avoided but too bad this guy DEMANDS for his free battery. And so many responses from other netizens came fast and furious:
So many responses in a short period of time. At least there are smarter people out there to teach billovee the meaning of shame. I also wrote a post in response to his smirk remarks.
This is because he had written remarks that were so shameless and witless that I felt that I had to make known my points too. Look, if it were that easy to get freebies, everybody in the world wouldn't be busy working anymore. Instead people would just go out to the street and demand for free food, free drinks, free clothes... just because they boasted that they had started off the preorder list first. Or so they claimed.
In life, nothing is ever that easy. Unless the guy gets a lot of support in his "quest" for that freebie, otherwise he can forget about getting anything at all.

Interesting Feature on my Wind
Whoa! I have just come across a very interesting bit of information on one of the features on my Wind. For the uninitiated, it's MSI Wind.
All the way I have been using the arrow keys to scroll down pages of documents or websites. But through this very useful forum, I came to know about the side scrolling on the trackpad. I have been so silly and didn't realise that I could have made my life simpler by just doing the trackpad touch. *sighs*
Oh well. Better late than never. So far, everything has been very good on the Wind, except for the battery life, which continues to disappoint as usual. I am now waiting for the 6-cell batteries to arrive in Singapore so that I can buy them for usage. Then I won't have to be plugged in to AC power for most of the time.
A portable laptop is supposed to allow the user to move around without being tied to the power socket. Yet for the Wind, the battery life fails to deliver what it promises.
The Wind would have been a perfect, little machine if not for its abysmal battery life. Oh well, life is not perfect and it doesn't go your way all the time. Patience is the only thing that will bring the 6-cell battery closer to me. =)

Really Old Piece of "Antique"
Look what the cat had brought in! Figuratively speaking, of course. Actually it was my mum who found this gem but then she dismantled apart for the sake of taking out the copper wire for sale. Take a look at the pictures below:
Yep, it's a very old piece of computer keyboard. One that you thought you'll never see it again. This probably belongs to the 486 series or perhaps much earlier. Notice that there are no Windows buttons that mark today's keyboard.
The placement of the F1 to F10 keys are also not your typical keyboard style. The control button is also different and the number pad has no Enter key.
This is such an old, old piece of "antique" which used to belong to my cousin. Now my mum has tore the computer apart to get to the wires. Sad though, I didn't manage to get a picture of the whole computer. Not even the mouse. Mum had threw it away by then. =(

More Windy Pictures
More pictures of my Wind are posted below for viewing. I am simply loving this Wind too much. Except for the super short battery life. I still can't get two hours from this baby. That mars the whole experience of owning a portable laptop.
The white case comes together with the Wind but it's kind of a mismatched combination in my case. So I will be on the lookout for a better-looking laptop case. =)

Cool Feature on my MSI Wind
I have been testing out a special function which is unique to MSI Wind netbooks. The underclocking button. That's right, you can actually underclock the processor to conserve the battery power. Interesting, isn't it?
Take a look at the screenshots of my Wind below.
The original processor speed, 1.6 GHz.
After using the underclocking function, it now goes down to 800 MHz.
This feature is activated by pressing the Fn+F10 together. Initially, the Wind was supposed to get an overclocking feature but at the last hour, the company decided to ship the final unit with a underclocking feature instead.
So now I am waiting to see how long my Wind can last this time round, compared to the previous 1 hour and 15 minutes. This is really fun! =)
